The Story

History of the Artifact

These coins were minted in a unique transitory period (1789-1792) of the revolution in which there was an attempt to blend the ideals of the French Revolution to the old values of the monarchy by crafting a Constitutional Monarchy. We can see evidence of this ideological stance on the coin. On the obverse surrounding the bust of Louis XVI, we still read “Louis XVI Roi des Francois’ (King of the French), on the obverse is the motto that best defines this period, ‘La Nation, La Loi, Le Roi’ - Nation, Law and King. Although his powers as King had been greatly diminished, the King still features distinctly on the coin and on the national slogan.

The attempted constitutional monarchy generated a legislative assembly which by 1792 had grown ineffective due to internal divisions regarding the role of the monarchy and the King’s own resistance to limitations imposed on his power. This faulty system exacerbated the most extreme factions of the revolution who saw in the constitutional monarchy, no sufficient tangible changes to their pre-revolution conditions.

On the 17th of January 1793, the Assembly condemned Louis to death for "conspiracy against public liberty and general safety", by 361 to 288. Four days later, at the Place de la Concorde, King Louis XVI was executed by guillotine in an event that would convulse world history for centuries to come.
