History of the Artifact

This silver denar was minted in Hungary during the 16th and 17th centuries, a period when the country was partially under Ottoman rule and deeply influenced by the European Renaissance. The obverse side features the coat of arms of Hungary, while the reverse displays a revered image of the Madonna and Child—a depiction of Mary with the infant Jesus. Notably, these coins also bear the year of minting, reflecting the growing practice in Europe at the time of adding dates to coinage.

During the Renaissance, Christian art and iconography held profound significance, and the Madonna and Child was among the most venerated images in Christian devotion. Depicting such a sacred motif on a coin not only elevated its symbolic value but also likely inspired its careful preservation, as it was regarded as more than just currency—it was a representation of faith and divine protection.
